How to make paper puppets with little ones
A simple activity that stimulates creativity and imagination
Paper puppets are a creative game that combines drawing, cutting, and... drama! Engaging children in making paper characters is a fun way to spend time together and stimulate imagination and fine motor skills.
What you need to get started
You'll need: sheets of paper or cardstock, round-tipped scissors, glue, markers, and sticks (like ice cream sticks). Optional: buttons, googly eyes, and leftover fabric for details.
Choosing characters: let your imagination run wild
Animals, princesses, dragons, robots, or fairytale characters... let the kids choose what to create. You can also invent new characters, with silly superpowers or unlikely names.
Step-by-step construction
Draw the character on cardstock and carefully cut it out. Glue a wooden stick to the back to hold it. You can also make movable parts (arms, legs) connected with brads to create "jointed" puppets.
The moment of the little theatre
Once ready, the puppets become the protagonists of a thousand stories. All it takes is an open box or a piece of cloth to create a small stage. Every child can become the author, director, and actor of their own fairy tale!
