Wood carving: tools and techniques to get started
Manual skills, patience and a lot of satisfaction
Woodcarving is a fascinating hobby that combines creativity, technique, and relaxation. But it's more than just carving wood: it's an art requiring precision, the right tools, and lots of practice. Here's how to get started on the right foot (or chisel).
Basic tools to get started
For beginners, all you need is a carving knife, V- and U-shaped chisels, a flat gouge, sandpaper, and softwood (such as basswood or pine). Cut-resistant gloves and finger guards are a must!
Choosing the right wood
Not all woods are created equal. To begin, it's best to focus on soft, easy-to-work woods with few knots. Basswood is ideal: compact, smooth, and perfect for effortless, detailed carving.
Basic carving techniques
Start with simple, shallow lines. Always work with the grain (never against it!) and sharpen your tools often. Learn to use the tip, side, and base of your tools to achieve different effects.
Simple projects to get started
A spoon, a decorated tag, a bookmark, or a small stick figure are perfect for the first exercises. They will help you become familiar with the material and develop control of your gestures.
