Macramé: Basic Knots for Creating Decorations and Accessories
One thread pulls another (and it becomes magic!)
Macramé is the art of hand-weaving threads to create decorations, jewelry, and home decor items with a boho and natural style. No needles or looms are needed: just your hands, a bit of string, and a few well-tied knots. Here are the basics to get you started on the right foot (or rather, with the right knot).
The right materials to get started
For your first projects, choose 3-5 mm cotton cord: it's easy to handle and makes knots stand out well. You'll also need a support (ring, stick, or rod), sturdy scissors, and a safety pin or ribbon to secure your work.
Cord knot: the most versatile
This is the basic macramé knot. It can be single or double, horizontal or diagonal. Learn to do it slowly: it's the key to most decorative designs. With two supporting cords and two workers, you can already create surprising geometric patterns.
Flat knot: elegant and sturdy
This knot is made by alternating threads to create a flat, solid texture. Perfect for bracelets, planters, and decorative panels. By repeating it in sequence, you can create wide, compact bands.
Start with a simple project
A keychain, a bracelet, or a small hanging planter are perfect for getting started. All it takes is a few basic knots and a little patience to see something unique emerge... and 100% handmade!
