Epoxy Resin: A Complete Beginner's Guide

From theory to first casting (without panic!)

Epoxy resin is fascinating for its glass-like appearance, brilliance, and versatility. But for beginners, it can seem like a magic potion, a little... sticky. Here's a practical guide to help you get started without making mistakes (and without gluing yourself to the table).

What is epoxy resin?

It's a two-component material: one part is resin, the other hardener. Mixing them in the correct proportions triggers a chemical reaction that solidifies the mixture into a hard, transparent material, perfect for artistic creations, jewelry, and coatings.

Essential materials

You'll need: clear epoxy resin, measuring cups, stirring sticks, gloves, a mask, and a silicone mold. Bonus: pigments, glitter, or small objects to incorporate for wow effects.

The perfect blend

The ratio must be accurate to the gram! Follow the manufacturer's instructions (usually 1:1 or 2:1). Stir slowly to avoid air bubbles and pour immediately into the mold. Work in a well-ventilated, clean, and dust-free area.

Common mistakes to avoid

Don't mix too quickly. Don't work in a cold or humid room. And don't touch the resin for 24 hours! Resin takes time: it needs to cure without disturbance. Patience and precision are your allies.
